  • Michigan Wolverine Recruiting: Brian Cole 2015 Commit Profile

    Posted at 8:45am — 7/27/2014

GBMWolverine Message Board Readers: Here is a overview of University of Michigan recent commitment Brian Cole.

Brian Cole became the ninth member of Michigan’s small 2015 recruiting class. He is a welcome and valued addition.

Brian Cole fits the Michigan pattern of late: a Midwest athlete with strong notables the program has made clear it is pursuing. Brian has played safety, running back, and receiver. He has versatility and could also be a speed guy on special teams. He is somewhat like Dymonte Thomas in that he is clearly recognized as an athlete. Like Thomas, he has qualities, size and speed, that most college athletes do not have. Depending on the recruiting source, it is safe to state that Brian is a mid-level four star. Brian is considered a top fifty to top 100 type of recruit. Recruiting sites rate Brian as the first or second best prospect in Michigan.

Brian has not played wide receiver throughout his entire football career, but he has excellent size at 6’2” and about 200 pounds. His jumping ability is excellent. For a guy his size, Brian can get off the line of scrimmage with a fast jump. It is not hyperbole to refer to him as fast with numerous reported 40 times of 4.4 and 4.5.

    Rankings:

    Scout:

Note: Stars do matter, but are not absolute in predicting success within a football program. So, with that in mind the GBMWolverine Staff has cleverly come up with a new system of ranking. We are using footballs instead of stars, how can one argue against a system that clever? Below are the interpretations of football power predicted way too boldly long before it matters. In other words, we will give informed opinion with the crystal ball and let the players determine what will happen through years of hard work.

    Criteria:
Raw talent, athleticism, position of need, intangibles.

    GBMWolverine Rankings:

    10 footballs: Instant impact player.
9 footballs: Three or four-year starter at a high level.
8 footballs: A starter with all league potential.

7 footballs: A meaningful starter at some time during a career.
6 footballs: A spot starter or special teams player.
5 footballs: Not in the two deep after a two years.
    4 footballs: Never made it.
    1-3 footballs: See the above.

GBMWolverine Staff had him at 8 1/2 to 9 footballs.

    Side Note:
Remember just as we did during the season with grading positions or groups we are very tough graders and expect a lot out of those positions or players so this is no different here.

    Overview:

Brian is a super athlete who could play multiple positions at Michigan. He has played safety, cornerback, quarterback, running back, and wide receiver in high school. The GBMWolverine staff strongly believes he begins his Michigan career at wide receiver. Brian ran for over 1200 yards with 16 touchdowns as a junior. He has good measurable including a 32-inch vertical and a reported 4.33 40-time that indicate strong athletic ability.

    Strengths:

Brian has a superior combination of size, speed, and athletic ability. Film shows fast twitch skills, jumping ability, quick starts, and an ability to change direction and explode out of the cuts. Film also shows very good straight-line speed. This is what Michigan has been seeking.

    Concerns/Needs Work:

Despite his athletic ability, Cole needs to refine his receiving skills. He has little experience performing stalk blocking, route running, and other details/fundamentals needed to play slot/wide receiver.

Red-shirt or play his Freshman Year?

GBMWolverine believes he will likely play his first year. Brian is the vertical threat that this offense needs, especially this could be accelerated if as stated he enrolls early.

Brian Cole reminds the GBMWolverine Staff of — Former Michigan Football Player — (Denard Robinson) — who played Quarterback. Only recent Michigan player with this type of speed has been Denard Robinson. From point of moving positions we see some Desmond Howard in him as well .

    Final Thoughts:

We welcome Brain Cole to Michigan and hope he has a successful career on and off the football field as a student-athlete at the University of Michigan. Go Blue!
