Michigan Wolverine Recruiting: Devin Asiasi 2016 Signed Profile

GBMWolverine Message Board Readers: Here is a overview of University of Michigan recently signed commitment Devin Asiasi.
Wednesday of the first week of February is signing day for NCAA Division 1 football. The last few years Michigan had precious few opportunities on signing day for the coaches and fans to wait around with baited breath for commitment announcements; either the class content was settled (leaving some anxiety for commit flips), or the usual big timers had long since eliminated Michigan as a destination.
As all know, the above scenario did not play out this year, nothing close, really. There was baited breath-holding for most of the day, as big commitment announcements came in one by one. In the afternoon, Rashan Gary let the entire Michigan fan base collectively exhale with near hurricane force when he named Michigan the school of his choice to pursue education and football.
But soon after, Michigan received a commitment from De La Salle big tight end, Devin Asiasi. This may have been icing on the cake of a big recruiting haul Michigan finalized for the 2016 class. This guy is big, and he acts like the playground bully. Players have nicknames, given and self-appointed. Mongo is a good choice for Devin. Any safety that watches his film is smartly hoping the Michigan staff places him on defense. His listed weight is around 265 pounds (or more) and his height has a big spread, from 6 3 to 66.
Again, the Michigan staff has signed a top athlete that can play on both sides of the ball. Coach BT likes Asiasi best on offense, while Doc, probably in the sense of sadistic punishment, likes the possibility of slimming Devin down just a little, placing him on a speed and flexibility program, and make life miserable for defenses.
Time will tell how this scenario plays out: maybe in the next few years Asiasi will play both sides, it could happen. His offer sheet consisted of several high profile programs, some perhaps not recruiting him as a tight end since tight end is not so glamorous for some offensive systems in this spread heavy generation.
Devin can best be described as a high four-star prospect by consensus; pretty much a top 100 recruit. He should fit in very well with the football climate in Ann Arbor.

Side Note: Remember just as we did during the season with grading positions or groups we are very tough graders and expect a lot out of those positions or players so this is no different here.
Michigan Coach Tim Drevno on Asiasi:
Talk about an explosive player, Devin is a very explosive guy. We have had a great string of tight ends at Stanford and now here at Michigan and hes right that at the top. I think he run blocks very well and he has great initial quickness and great athletic ability. Devin has the ability to make a play after he catches the ball. I really like his explosiveness as a player. He is going to be a great addition to our tight end corps and how we like to use tight ends in our system.

Devin is an ultra-competitive team guy who has had an illustrious high school career. He won two state championships playing for one of the best high school teams in the country at Concord De La Salle. As a player, he is tenacious, violent and physically bludgeons his opponents. He also has unusual quickness, ball skills and elusiveness for an athlete of his size.

Overview:
Devin Asiasi is an outstanding two-way player who could play either defensive line or tight end at Michigan. Coach personally likes his defensive film better than the offensive film, but we expect him to end up at tight end. Devin had 16 carries for 96 yards and 1 touchdown over the last three seasons. He also caught 41 passes with 8 touchdowns. On defense, Devin recorded 98 tackles to go along with 15.5 sacks. He is a solid student with a 2.9 GPA.
Strengths:
Devin Asiasi is a good combination of size, strength and athletic ability. He runs very well for his size, but will not win a high-end 100-meter race. Devin also shows a good change of direction and explosiveness out of his breaks, again very nice for a guy his size. Devin is a fundamentally sound online blocker, a must at De La Salle, and is physical beating jams. Devin has good hands and is surprisingly agile and smooth for his size; he does look fluid for a monster type. On defense, Devin shows a solid punch and is a good tackler. Of note is the observation Devin is very physical at the point of attack.
Concerns/Needs Work:
Devin will need to improve his conditioning and perhaps reshape his body. Even though Devin is not strength challenged, like every freshman that needs to block, strength must be upgraded. To be a very effective tight end, Devin will need to upgrade his quickness and move his feet better.
Red-shirt or play his Freshman Year?
GBMWolverine Message Board Staff believes he will likely play his first year. Of Michigans three tight end recruits, Devin is most game ready from day one.
