  • Michigan Wolverine Recruiting: Quinn Nordin 2016 Signed Profile

    Posted at 7:00am — 2/9/2016

GBMWolverine Message Board Readers: Here is a overview of University of Michigan recently signed commitment Quinn Nordin.

Kickers are kickers, are different, and can be near impossible to apply correlational predictive success. That perhaps is why some sites rate even the best kicking prospects as two or three stars. Some may undervalue the recruitment of kickers since many are not offered scholarships. But as any special team coach will pontificate, using one scholarship to solve a problem for four years is actually a great deal. It is of course an even better scenario if the kicker becomes one the nations best.

Kicking field goals in college is much different form high school. The ball is different and the stakes are much higher. Focus and mental toughness are absolute musts.

Quinn Nordin is a kicker from Rockford, Michigan. Until recently he was a Penn State commit. But the overly reported sleepover at Nordin’s house with Jim Harbaugh may or may not have been the determining factor in Nordin’s late flip. He had a decent offer sheet and visited Baylor and USC late in his recruitment.

Quinn does have size, athletic talent, a strong leg, and a quick punting stroke. If he punts in college, his actual total catch to kick time may need to be cut down.

I'm from Michigan, this is my home state. This is where i started and this is where I'm going to finish it.

    Rankings:

    24/7:
    ESPN:
    Rivals:
    Scout:

Note: Stars do matter, but are not absolute in predicting success within a football program. So, with that in mind the GBMWolverine Message Board Staff has cleverly come up with a new system of ranking. We are using footballs instead of stars, how can one argue against a system that clever? Below are the interpretations of football power predicted way too boldly long before it matters. In other words, we will give informed opinion with the crystal ball and let the players determine what will happen through years of hard work.

Criteria: Raw talent, athleticism, position of need, intangibles.

    GBMWolverine Message Board Staff Rankings:

    10 footballs: Instant impact player.
9 footballs: Three or four-year starter at a high level.
8 footballs: A starter with all league potential.
7 footballs: A meaningful starter at some time during a career.
6 footballs: A spot starter or special teams player.
5 footballs: Not in the two deep after a two years.
    4 footballs: Never made it.
    1-3 footballs: See the above.

We have him at 8 footballs. (based on skill at his position).

Side Note: Remember just as we did during the season with grading positions or groups we are very tough graders and expect a lot out of those positions or players so this is no different here.

Michigan Coach Chris Partridge on Quinn Nordin:

Quinn has a powerful leg and can kick, punt and kickoff, so he is going to be able to help us in all three phases. He is very athletic. He was a great lacrosse player and had offers to go play high level lacrosse in college. Quinn will be a guy who can bring a lot of power to our kicking game so we are really excited about that dimension. He is a very good teammate. From what I’ve already seen, from what he’s doing with the kids in this recruiting class and on his visits, Quinn’s going to fit right into the locker room and be a big part of our football team in the future.

    Key Stats:

    • Punted 10 times as a senior, with seven going for 50+ yards, including a 67-yard career long (52.9 avg.); had six punts downed inside the opponent’s 20-yard line
    • Converted 2-3 field goal attempts with a long of 51 during senior year 19 of his 23 kickoffs went for touchbacks as a senior
    • Punted the ball 26 times for 1,020 yards (39.2 avg.) with a long of 55 as a junior
    • Totaled 12 kicks inside the opposition’s 20-yard line and had five kicks of 50+ yards junior year
    • 22 of his 29 kickoffs resulted in touchbacks as a junior

    Honors:

    • USA Today High School All-America first team
    • Listed as the nation’s top kicker by Scout.com and the No. 9 overall kicker by ESPN
    • Rated as a three-star prospect by Rivals.com and the No. 22 prospect in the state of Michigan
    • ESPN three-star prospect and the 19th-best player in Michigan
    • Scout.com four-star prospect and the nation’s and Michgan’s top-rated kicker

    Overview:

Quinn Nordin punts and kicks for his Rockford, Michigan high school team. He has been an attendee of the famous Kornblue Kicking Academy. Quinn kicked a 65 yarder at the academy and has made a kick over 50 yards in actual competition. Nordin is a very good athlete who plays lacrosse at a high level. He has a 3.7 GPA.

    Strengths:

Quinn has ideal size for a kicker. He clearly has the leg strength and speed to compete early for a job. Most of his kickoffs are touchbacks. The ball explodes off his foot and he gets quick height on his field goals. Quinn is an improving punter, one who gets good height and distance.

    Concerns/Needs Work:

Quinn will need to work on his speed to the ball and total kick time. This may be done by shortening his approach. Like most kickers his success will rely on how well he adjusts to the college kicking game and how well he reacts to kicking in front of 110,000 fans.

Red-shirt or play his Freshman Year?

GBMWolverine Message Board Staff believes he will likely red-shirt his first year. Unless somehow Kenny Allen goes in the tank, or the staff simply decides to split duties because they don’t want Allen handling it all.

Quinn Nordin reminds the GBMWolverine Staff of — Former Michigan Football Player — Remy Hamilton — who handled the Punting and Kicking at Michigan.
