  • Michigan Wolverine Recruiting: Devin Bush Jr. 2016 Signed Profile

    Posted at 9:50am — 2/19/2016

GBMWolverine Message Board Readers: Here is a overview of University of Michigan recently signed commitment Devin Bush Jr.

The Michigan coaching staff, led by Head Coach Jim Harbaugh, always had been a serious suitor for the commitment of high profile signee Devin Bush Junior. There likely were some elated coaches in Ann Arbor when young Bush made it official with starting school as a early enrolled student. There was not universal agreement on his rating between services, but suffice it to say Bush Jr. is a low to middle of the road 4-star recruit, the type of player 95% of college programs would be delighted to have on board.

More glowing was the offer list, said to total over 40 programs, including many of the nation’s elite household name types like Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Miami, and Texas. This is not a typical three-star offer list. Devin Bush Jr. is not the type of physical specimen that people look at when 17 years old and state “There is a future first round draft pick and a five-star recruit". No, not exactly that, but Devin is a football player, a baller: tough, loyal, intense, and a take no prisoner type. He is indeed a very good football player and not a premium physical specimen. If Devin were 6’ 3 and 250 pounds, then one could safely bet his star status would have risen.

Bush Jr. is the son of Devin Bush Sr., an accomplished college and pro player. As we all just found out that Devin Bush Sr. is joining the Michigan football program in a defensive analyst/recruiting position which has been rumored all the way back to the regular season has finally come to fruition.

His (Junior's) height has been a concern to some casual fans, but height was not on the mind of many opponents who succumbed to his hard hitting ability. Certainly, height was not the primary variable in his recruitment by premium programs.

As many you are aware, Devin’s team recently won a Florida state title. Teammates at Flanagan, Devin Gil and Josh Metellus, will be joining Devin Bush Jr. at Michigan. It makes a statement that despite the home state (Florida) and the family (father playing at Florida State) factors involved; Bush Jr. developed such a strong bond with Ann Arbor, the university, and the Michigan football program. As has been mentioned before, some types simply gravitate to Ann Arbor. The extra help from Harbaugh and his summer recruiting tour did not hurt one iota.

    Rankings:

    24/7:
    ESPN:
    Rivals:
    Scout:

Note: Stars do matter, but are not absolute in predicting success within a football program. So, with that in mind the GBMWolverine Message Board Staff has cleverly come up with a new system of ranking. We are using footballs instead of stars, how can one argue against a system that clever? Below are the interpretations of football power predicted way too boldly long before it matters. In other words, we will give informed opinion with the crystal ball and let the players determine what will happen through years of hard work.

Criteria: Raw talent, athleticism, position of need, intangibles.

    GBMWolverine Message Board Staff Rankings:

    10 footballs: Instant impact player.
9 footballs: Three or four-year starter at a high level.
8 footballs: A starter with all league potential.
7 footballs: A meaningful starter at some time during a career.

6 footballs: A spot starter or special teams player.
5 footballs: Not in the two deep after a two years.
    4 footballs: Never made it.
    1-3 footballs: See the above.

    We have him at 7 - 7 1/2 footballs.

Side Note: Remember just as we did during the season with grading positions or groups we are very tough graders and expect a lot out of those positions or players so this is no different here.

Michigan Coach Don Brown on Devin Bush Jr.:

Devin plays extremely well between the tackles but also has the ability to run sideline-to-sideline. We’re looking for him to be a MIKE or WILL linebacker, which in our system are very similar. His dad is a coach, so he is a coach’s son, which you always like. He brings a lot of great intangibles and will be a special guy.

Michigan Coach Chris Partridge on Devin Bush Jr.:

Devin is a tremendous athlete at the linebacker position. He’s a thick downhill linebacker with exceptional speed and quickness. He is explosive. He is a striker. Devin’s going to be a young man that can really run around and make plays all over the field. He loves football and he loves the intensity of it. He will be a big hitter for us making plays from sideline to sideline. Devin is a legacy; his Dad was a phenomenal player, a Super Bowl champion, which helps you understand why Devin is very smart on the field. He’s got a good head on his shoulders and he understands the game. He has a great personality, is outgoing, and will be a leader in the locker room and in the school. Everyone seems to gravitate towards Devin. We expect big things out of him.

    Key Stats:

    • Registered 67 tackles, nine tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks during his senior year
    • Registered 67 tackles and 4.5 sacks in just 10 games played as a junior
    • Totaled 114 tackles, two sacks and three interceptions as a sophomore

    Honors:

    • Rated as a four-star prospect by Rivals.com, the No. 25 prospect in Florida and No. 171 prospect nationally
    • ESPN four star prospect, No. 31 prospect in Florida and No. 181 overall in ESPN300
    • Scout.com three star prospect; listed as the 13th-best inside linebacker nationally and the second-best inside linebacker in the state of Florida
    • High School Butkus Award semifinalist
    • PrepStar Magazine All-American; the 210th-rated overall player in the nation and the 16th-best outside linebacker prospect
    • Participated in the 2016 Under Armour All-American Game
    • Earned Class 8A first-team all-state honors as a junior and senior

In the Words of the Bush Jr. Family:

Devin possesses many attributes that not only make him a phenomenal person, but also an exceptional football player. One memory that stands out to me is when Devin fractured his wrist during the first play on defense in the first round of playoffs. While in the hospital experiencing excruciating pain, the only thing he could think about was his teammates and how they had finished the game. Although his season had ended that night, he couldn't wait to get back to the team. He finished the season by coaching defense as they won two more games -- just one win shy of the state title game. During all of this, Devin demonstrated selflessness, commitment and leadership while inspiring his teammates.

    Overview:

Devin plays for one of the top programs in Florida. Bush Jr. is a two-year starter for Flanagan High in Broward County. He could play either inside or out, but we think he is a better fit at Mike. He clearly has the skill and aptitude to help on special teams.

    Strengths:

Devin shows a solid build and excellent strength for a high school athlete. Plays the game with the passion and fire we love. He gets downhill in a hurry and can also play in the phone booth. Film shows very good movement skills that include, quickness, burst, and lateral speed. Bush is usually around the ball and shows good physicality. Note: these are traits that the staff has practically advertised on help wanted signs.

    Concerns/Needs Work:

Devin lacks the ideal length for linebacker. His footwork also needs an upgrade. Coverage skills are also a work in progress.

Red-shirt or play his Freshman Year?

GBMWolverine Message Board Staff believes he will likely play his first year. He might be needed and red-shirt may not be an easy choice simply because of depth/talent issue along with losing so many players at linebacker from last season. Michigan linebackers need an upgrade in speed and athletic ability.

Devin Bush Jr. reminds the GBMWolverine Message Board Staff of -- Former Football Player -- London Fletcher -- who played Linebacker. Fletcher played high school football at Cleveland St. Joe and then went to college at John Carrol. Most remember him at either the Rams or the Redskins in the NFL.
