Overview:
Most of you by now are aware that Michigan offered and received a commitment from Ann Arbor Pioneer running back and athlete Drake Johnson. Here is a short summary.
Drake is a superior athlete with an excellent combination of size and speed. He is capable of playing multiple positions, including safety, running back, and wide receiver. Drake is a good student with a 3.0 GPA from a highly rated school system. He is a championship caliber hurdler during track season. Make no mistake; this youngster has demonstrated very strong improvement in the span of one year.
Strengths:
Drake has great speed, but also shows good balance and a reasonable ability to cut. Film shows that Drake has good hands and has the ability to catch the football out of the backfield. Also, Drake shows the ability to break tackles and can be a physical runner. His overall athletic skill gives Drake an opportunity to be a special, special teams player.
Needs Work:
If he remains a running back, Drake needs watch his pad level, to run a bit lower, and bend his knees. He also needs to honor the hole by demonstrating some patience. He has a habit of bouncing out of the hole too early.
Red-shirt or play his Freshman Year?
GBMWolverine believes he will likely play his first year. It is really 50/50 right now, if Drake comes in early, he might see the field early on special teams or if others ahead of him slip up or move on along with who else might fill this class.
Drake Johnson reminds the GBMWolverine Staff of — Former Michigan Football Player — Clarence Williams — who played Running Back.
Final Thoughts:
We welcome Drake Johnson to Michigan and hope he has a successful career on and off the football field as a student-athlete at the University of Michigan. Go Blue!
