GBMWolverine Message Board Readers: Here is a overview of University of Michigan recently signed commitment Rashan Gary.
The late and most great Alfred Hitchcock would certainly have been proud of the drama associated with the recruitment of the 2016 consensus number one recruit, Rashan Gary of Paramus Catholic High School. Michigan was always at or near the forefront of the long and well publicized recruitment, but the final result is now known: Gary is a Michigan Wolverine.
The attention is frequently like that for the nations top recruit the last few years, and it has become common practice to sign on National Signing Day with the media providing an assist.
Besides Jabrill Peppers, Michigan has not received a commitment from a player as highly ranked for quite some time. His promise is notable; his journey to the top of high school football was impressive. Now however Rashan Gary starts over. It is the hope of Michigan faithful that Gary again climbs the ladder. Michigan is/was in need of new blood on the defensive line, as many will end their playing careers at the end of the 2016 season.
Rashan has some flaws, but at camp events and the Army All-Star game, he clearly was the toughest guy to block. He could be an inside force, one Michigan has lacked since Mike Martins senior season.
There will be initial questions as to whether or not Rashan will fit the Michigan defensive scheme. Clearly, Rahans interest did not wane when Durkin left for Maryland and Don Brown took over. Clearly, Brown has been around the block and knows that when he is presented a gift cannon; find a place or scheme to maximize the firepower. Rashan is good enough to be moved around affording Michigan versatility in scheme and the use of Gary. He can rush the edge and clog the middle. For a big guy he is fast and with work in strength and conditioning and reshaping his final body structure, Rashan could become dominant at the next level. He should, with coaching and good fortune regarding injury, be a big force. The question will be can he dominate or merely contribute as a freshman? This is tough to pull off, but not out of the realm of possibility. Eventually, Gary should caused defensive coordinators to game plan heavily to offset his talents.
In todays sphere, it is dangerous to red-shirt such talent, since it is far from a certainty such a talented player will be on campus more than three years. There is promise, the promise is high, but guarantees are few and far between. Still, all of Michigan fandom is celebrating.

Side Note: Remember just as we did during the season with grading positions or groups we are very tough graders and expect a lot out of those positions or players so this is no different here.
Michigan Coach Don Brown on Rashan Gary:
Rashan is a difference maker. He can rush on the edge. Hes extremely physical and talented. He has a great motor and plays hard every down. Rashan is also a guy we can move around and play at any of the four down defensive line positions. I was really impressed with how hard he played in the Under Armour All-American Game.

Rashan is physically talented individual and does an outstanding job at the point of attack in the run and as a pass rusher. Overview:
Rashan Gary is a high school superstar who is capable of playing anywhere on the defensive line. We like him as a 3-tech in a 4-man front, or as a 5-tech in a 3-man front. He recorded 10 tackles and 27.5 sacks over the last two seasons. Rashan played for one of the true powerhouse programs on the East Coast, Paramus Catholic. He is an excellent student with a reported 3.85 GPA.
Strengths:
Rashan Gary is a super combination of size, power and athletic ability in a jumbo player. As mentioned, he moves extremely well for his size and has good agility and bend for a defensive lineman. He uses his get off and quickness to get to offensive linemen and knock them off balance. Rashan also uses his strength to cause offensive linemen to back up. Rashan does a nice job in pursuit and has a solid closing burst. He even has the frame to add more strength and good weight.
Concerns/Needs Work:
Rashan is a bit raw and will need to refine his technique. He will also need to learn to punch and use his hands to defeat college level blocks and get off blockers. Also, it can be expected that he will need work to fight through double team blocks that are almost certain.
Red-shirt or play his Freshman Year?
GBMWolverine believes he will likely play. We would like to see him red-shirt to maximize his transition time, but he likely will play, number one signees play. We would feel a lot more comfortable his first year if he came in early, but that isnt the case.
