  • Michigan Wolverine Recruiting: Eddie McDoom 2016 Signed Profile

    Posted at 7:45am — 2/21/2016

GBMWolverine Message Board Readers: Here is a overview of University of Michigan recently signed commitment Eddie McDoom.

The gold rush continued late on in the National Signing Day bonanza as several key Michigan recruits, it seems, rushed to join in on the fun: the fun being taking a college journey at Michigan with irrepressible (and other descriptors) Head Coach Jim Harbaugh.

As a new signee, Eddie’s name has already evoked images of great possibilities across the web, as Michigan fans envision bellowing out the words doom or boom after future Eddie touchdowns. For years, GBMWolverine has produced profiles about three-star profiles. Some are glowing and some are less than unconditionally supportive.

Lately, Michigan has received commitments from several high three and lower four stars that appear to hold good promise and fit what the Harbaugh system is seeking. On the surface, there were, sites claimed, over half a hundred receivers like Eddie in the 2016 group. The view here is that number shrinks noticeably if looking at a receiver's potential to be dynamic. He is clearly good enough to play at a power five school; this is not a project venture. Looking at film, one quickly sees Eddie straight-up easily whips his defender so many times. The question is then explored- how good is the opposition? It is Florida, but other than that, who knows for sure.

One thing that cannot be questioned is how easy Eddie can make it look: really easy, Eddie can run tunnel screens, fly patterns, and crossing stuff very well. He may not have the best route running ability (not bad), but Eddie cuts quick and effortlessly without giving up speed, and important trait at the college level. Where will Eddie play at Michigan? He is versatile enough to play either slot or wide receiver. Eddie’s reported speed is far from blazing, but he has attributes that let him get behind the defense and make tons of yards after a catch. He is slick and smooth and may not even be capable of explaining how he beats people so easily, it just happens.

Eddie McDoom had a nice offer sheet, one that included big school powers like Florida, Miami, Oklahoma, Clemson and Alabama. He was a former Oregon commit. Oregon seeks big play, explosive guys at wide receiver and slot, guys that score plenty of touchdowns by getting open, catching the ball after securing a small advantage in space, making people miss, and getting into the endzone. The group of receivers within the 2016 commits has talent, versatility, and play making ability. The class of 2014 and 2015 receivers waiting in the wings better get it on to hold off this bunch.

    Rankings:

    24/7:
    ESPN:
    Rivals:
    Scout:

Note: Stars do matter, but are not absolute in predicting success within a football program. So, with that in mind the GBMWolverine Message Board Staff has cleverly come up with a new system of ranking. We are using footballs instead of stars, how can one argue against a system that clever? Below are the interpretations of football power predicted way too boldly long before it matters. In other words, we will give informed opinion with the crystal ball and let the players determine what will happen through years of hard work.

Criteria: Raw talent, athleticism, position of need, intangibles.

    GBMWolverine Message Board Staff Rankings:

    10 footballs: Instant impact player.
9 footballs: Three or four-year starter at a high level.
8 footballs: A starter with all league potential.
7 footballs: A meaningful starter at some time during a career.

6 footballs: A spot starter or special teams player.
5 footballs: Not in the two deep after a two years.
    4 footballs: Never made it.
    1-3 footballs: See the above.

We have him at 7 1/2, maybe 8 footballs.

Side Note: Remember just as we did during the season with grading positions or groups we are very tough graders and expect a lot out of those positions or players so this is no different here.

Michigan Coach Jedd Fisch on Eddie McDoom:

Eddie was our last commitment at wide receiver. He has elite speed; ran a 10.5 hundred meter dash, a sub-21 two hundred, a sub-47 four hundred. This guy is a football player/track athlete. He came from a great football program at West Orange High School in Orlando, Florida. He was a very sought-after football player who understands that he is coming in here right away to impact our team. Eddie has had great production everywhere he has been, from catching a touchdown in the all-star game he played in to the amount of touchdowns he had in high school. He has breakaway speed and really good catching ability. Eddie is a quiet kid who enjoys working hard and enjoys the process of getting better.

    Key Stats:

    • Made 29 catches for 653 yards and nine touchdowns during his senior year
    • Hauled in 47 receptions for 854 yards and 15 touchdowns as a junior
    • Caught 27 passes for 375 yards and four touchdowns during sophomore season

    Honors:

    • Rated as a three-star prospect by Rivals.com and the No. 66 overall prospect in the state of Florida
    • ESPN four-star prospect; listed as the No. 35 overall player in Florida and the 184th-best prospect nationally in the ESPN300
    • Scout.com four-star prospect, the No. 74 wide receiver nationally and the 14th-best receiver in Florida
    • PrepStar Magazine All-American, the 278th-rated overall player nationally and the 54th-ranked wide receiver prospect

In the Words of the McDoom Family:

Eddie is a hard worker. It hasn't always been easy, however. Everything that he's achieving today, he did it with hard work and grit. Of course there were a slew of people who supported him along the way, but nobody could put the time and effort that he has to accomplishing his dreams. A quote I once read summarizes my son's work ethic in achieving his goals. "I never dreamed about success. I worked for it." I can't say how proud I am as a mother to see my son work so hard and achieve one of his many life goals. If this is just the beginning, then I know that as a mother, I don't have to worry about where he's going in life.

There are plenty of instances where Eddie has looked out for others. My favorite story about Eddie is when he played in Pop Warner. There was a new kid that wasn't used to running during warm-ups and drills so the first time Eddie saw this he took it upon himself to run with his teammate and finish alongside. Everyone knows how fast of a runner Eddie is, however, that day was just another day of how his compassion encompasses who he is as a person. He never wants to leave anyone behind. Those that don't know him might see him only as an athlete, but those truly know him knows his heart is all about others.

Eddie is first and foremost respectful. This is seen off the field as well as on the field. He shows the utmost respect not only to people he knows but to all. In football, he respects the coaches and his teammates, as well as the opposing team. You work hard for everything that you want to achieve, but you do it with dignity and honor. That's how he plays on and off the field.

    Overview:

Eddie McDoom is a versatile pass catcher who could play either split end or slot at Michigan. He caught 76 passes for 25 touchdowns and 1500 yards over the last two seasons. He runs the sprints in track with a best 100meter time of 10.8. Eddie also competes in the 200m and relays.

    Strengths:

Eddie McDoom has very good movement skills that supplement quick feet, good acceleration, and solid top end speed. He also shows good agility and loose hips. A big strength is how Eddie changes directions on a dime, and he shows the critical ability to make the first defender miss. He has enough speed to stretch a defense and the sure hands on underneath stuff to be a concern for defenders. Eddie does a nice job of tracking the ball and adjusting to it in the air.

    Concerns/Needs Work:

Eddie will need to add some weight and strength. He also needs to improve his physical play, including blocking and fighting through jams. Route running is solid, but could also be upgraded.

Red-shirt or play his Freshman Year?

GBMWolverine Message Board Staff believes he will likely play his first year or should say he has a good shot.

Eddie McDoom reminds the GBMWolverine Message Board Staff of -- Current Michigan Football Player — Jehu Chesson — smaller, but some similarities who played Wide Receiver.
