  • Michigan Wolverine Recruiting: Joshua Uche 2016 Signed Profile

    Posted at 11:30am — 2/24/2016

GBMWolverine Message Board Readers: Here is a overview of University of Michigan recently signed commitment Joshua Uche.

Late in the recruiting cycle of 2016, two recruits from the Deep South, Elysee Mbem-Bosse of Ellenwood, Georgia, and Joshua Uche of Miami, Florida committed and then later signed on National Signing Day.

Mbem-Bosse may be slightly higher in the overall rankings, but Joshua Uche, in some circles, is creating more excitement about his potential to be a major contributor. That begs a question of why so, and the response is simply big time twitch speed and athleticism.

Michigan went hunting linebackers and received a commitment from two players who may or may not play the position of great need. Uche is listed as a defensive end, but it could conceivably take two years to gain the needed size and strength to play a typical weakside defensive end position. A hybrid “buck style” end may be another situation where the old style defense used last season, but with another namesake. Or, true linebacker is certainly a possibility with Uche currently being listed at only 215 pounds. This is a player with potential sizzle to get into the opposition’s backfield.

    Can't wait.

    Rankings:

    24/7:
    ESPN:
    Rivals:
    Scout:

Note: Stars do matter, but are not absolute in predicting success within a football program. So, with that in mind the GBMWolverine Message Board Staff has cleverly come up with a new system of ranking. We are using footballs instead of stars, how can one argue against a system that clever? Below are the interpretations of football power predicted way too boldly long before it matters. In other words, we will give informed opinion with the crystal ball and let the players determine what will happen through years of hard work.

Criteria: Raw talent, athleticism, position of need, intangibles.

    GBMWolverine Message Board Staff Rankings:

    10 footballs: Instant impact player.
9 footballs: Three or four-year starter at a high level.
8 footballs: A starter with all league potential.
7 footballs: A meaningful starter at some time during a career.
6 footballs: A spot starter or special teams player.
5 footballs: Not in the two deep after a two years.
    4 footballs: Never made it.
    1-3 footballs: See the above.

We have him at 7 1/2 footballs.

Side Note: Remember just as we did during the season with grading positions or groups we are very tough graders and expect a lot out of those positions or players so this is no different here.

Michigan Coach Don Brown on Josh Uche:

The number one thing he can do is he can pass rush with anyone in the East. He has a great get off and can turn the corner. Josh uses his hands really well. We’re projecting him as a SAM linebacker. Has shown some ability to be ability to defend on the edge but can also play in space. He has the ability to get bigger. We really think his pass rush ability is unique and we will work to teach him and develop his game as a linebacker. Josh is a special athletic talent.”

Michigan Coach Chris Partridge on Josh Uche:

In high school, Josh Uche was primarily an off the edge explosive pass rusher. We are going to be able to stand him up at the SAM position, and he is also going to drop more in coverage. Josh is very fast and physical. He is going to be a guy who can do multiple things and also come off the edge and get the quarterback. Josh can run down the field and make a ton of plays. He’s got a very high motor; never stops going. Josh has a great style to him. He was definitely the best-dressed young man on his official visit. He has got a flare to him and he really enjoys style. He will be a fun young man to be around and have as a member of our football program.

    Key Stats:

    • Tallied 50 tackles and 14 sacks with two forced fumbles as a senior
    • Registered 34 tackles, 8.5 sacks and two forced fumbles during junior year

    Honors:

    • Rated as a three-star prospect by Rivals.com and the No. 50 recruit in the state of Florida
    • Three-star prospect by Scout.com; listed as the No. 60 defensive end in the nation
    • ESPN three-star prospect, the No. 44 outside linebacker nationally and the 130th-best prospect in Florida

    Overview:

Uche is a former Miami commit who reopened his recruitment when Head Coach Al Golden was fired. He is a rare athlete who plays well with his hand on the ground or in a two-point stance. Joshua Uche also shows the skills to help on special teams. He recorded 84 tackles, 22.5 sacks, and 4 tackles for losses over the last few seasons.

    Strengths:

Joshua is a superior athlete with outstanding quick feet and explosive get off. As such, he can be described as a fast twitch athlete who shows good lateral movement and change of direction. Uche is a solid tackler who uses his quick start to overwhelm offensive tackles. He is at least competent in coverage and making plays in space. Importantly, Uche plays with energy and a good motor.

    Concerns/Needs Work:

Sometimes Joshua is over reliant on bull and speed rushes. He will need to learn a rip and other techniques to get opposing linemen hands off him. Joshua also needs to improve his punch and shedding. As usual for small hybrid types, he will need to get bigger and stronger.

Red-shirt or play his Freshman Year?

GBMWolverine Message Board Staff believes he will likely red-shirt his first year.

Joshua Uche reminds the GBMWolverine Message Board Staff of -- Former Michigan Football Player — Mario Ojemudia — who played Defensive End/Outside Linebacker.
